We Petitioned the Obama Administration to:
Direct the Department of Education and Congress to Remove the Yearly Standardized Testing Mandates of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Race to the Top (RttT).
A President initiated both mandates. Now a President should end the part that harms children.
- Ending the controversial yearly standardized testing is the first step toward ending the damage done by No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top. No other country puts students through this incessant testing.
- Let the long-established National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results continue to provide a national picture of student academic progress.
- Each state will determine the proper role of standardized testing to meet their needs.
####
No Child Left Behind was the first reauthorization of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to mandate yearly standardized tests in order to establish a federal accountability structure. This version of ESEA perverted the laws original focus, set a federal role in education not originally intended by this law, and produced unacceptable, unintended consequences directly attributable to yearly standardized tests tied to a national accountability system. That is why the ties must be severed — not to waive away responsibility— to make right what has proved to be so wrong for America’s children.
Without support by organization and with no ability to effectively spread the word through social media, the petition failed to get enough interest. What does that say about US?
