Letter Templates: FBI Warning about Education Technology

LETTER TEMPLATE #1

Dear ________________ School District Board Members & Administration,

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a Public Service Announcement (PSA) on September 13, 2018, concerning Education Technology and Privacy. Your attention to this matter is essential.

With research demonstrating physical, mental, behavioral, and academic problems associated with early introduction to digital instruction, excessive screen time, and the risks associated with data collection, as expressed by the FBI in the PSA provided to you, it appears the use of technology in the classroom, in all forms, warrants serious and immediate reconsideration.

Please stop the expansion of online instruction and testing until what time the board, district administration, teachers, parents, and concerned citizens are given more information and have the time to consider what is best for students.

Please feel free to contact me after you have had a chance to read and consider the announcement. I am interested in hearing what further actions you see warranted in order to protect the health and privacy of this community’s children.

Sincerely,

LETTER TEMPLATE #2

Dear ____________________________

A friend alerted me to the PSA from the FBI that she came across.  I’ve attached the file.

She was concerned enough to pass it on and to share it with her school board member.  Here’s what she included in her message: “With research demonstrating physical, mental, behavioral, and academic problems associated with early introduction to digital instruction, excessive screen time, and the risks associated with data collection as expressed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Public Service Announcement I have submitted to you, it appears the continued use of one-to-one devices in the classroom warrants serious reconsideration.”

After reading the information in the PSA, I felt it was worth sharing with you.

Sincerely,

LETTER TEMPLATE #3

Dear ____________________________

Learning about two serious data breaches in the past week has motivated me to share this information with you. Five hundred million records were exposed by the Marriot hack and another One hundred million records with the Quora data breach. This got me wondering, is anyone’s data safe? What is my school district doing to protect student data?

I look forward to hearing from you and to continuing this conversation.

Sincerely,

FOLLOW UP WILL BE REQUIRED.

A quick phone call to your school district ,national and state officials offices to confirm the communication was received is a necessary first step. Then put it on your calendar as to when you think you have given them a reasonable amount of time. Call again. Make your connections to whomever will be in charge of following up with you.

Expect action. Taking the FBI warning and their recommendations for parents into consideration is a reasonable request.
